Under the background of the “core literacy” leading the reform of basic education in China,how to implement core literacy has become an important issue in the educational field.The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 edition)puts“core literacy”as the leading role of the curriculum concept and advocates the activity-based approach to English learning so as to promote the sustainable development of students’ core literacy in the whole process of compulsory education.Thereinto,the activity-based approach to English learning combines learning and thinking,the basis of which are application and innovation.As one of the course contents,the discourse carries the language and cultural knowledge to express the theme and provides students with diversified text content.The concept of the activity-based approach to English learning combines content with activities,which promotes the integrated development of students’ language ability,thinking capicity and culture awareness.Therefore,it’s necessary to carry out discourse analysis and implement teaching according to the concept of the activity-based approach to English learning.The question is the guide of discourse learning,which throughout the beginning to the end of discourse reading.Question design is the premise of discourse reading implementation.The question quality is related to the teaching effect,which has a direct impact on students,for instance,arouseing reading interest,marstering reading strategies,improving reading ability and cultivating thinking quality.Based on this,it is vital to implement the study of question design.This paper adopts questionnaire,interview and classroom observation,with the aid of teaching case analysis to conduct the study.Firstly,summarizing the research situation at home and abroad.Then,clearing the core concept.Next,adopting the activity-based approach to English learning and the constructivism learning theory as the theoretical bases.The study targets at the following questions.First,what are the shortcomings in the question design of discourse reading instruction? Second,what are the strategies for the question design by using the activity-based approach to English learning? Third,what are the preliminary effects of question design by using the activity-based approach to English learning?The study was carried out in a middle school of the city where the author had the internship.The conclusions of the research are as follows.First of all,the shortcomings of question design include: fragmentation,shallow layering and utilitarianization.secondly,focusing on in-depth discourse analysis,paying attention to the thinking gradients and being student-oriented are three effective strategies for question design.Thirdly,question design by using the activity-based approach to English learning can increase students’ participation,help students to read and comprehend,and improve students’ thinking training as well.It is hoped that this study can not only stimulate teachers to learn and implement the concept of English curriculum standards but also provide epistemological and methodological guidance of the activity-based approach to English learning so as to contribute to the educational goal of English.
