The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017 Edition 2020Revision)proposed the concept of activity-based English learning to develop students’ English core competency.Since then,some attention has been paid to English reading teaching in senior high school based on the view of English learning activity.However,due to the short implementation time of the revised edition,the research awareness of this aspect is still weak.This paper attempts to deeply study questionchain design of senior high school English reading teaching for further promotion of English core competency based on the view of English learning activity.This study lasted for several months,took 40 high school English teachers as questionnaire objects,and selected three English teachers in Grade One for classroom observation.The author used the research methods of questionnaire,classroom observation,teaching log and interview to collect and analyze statistics.This paper focuses on the following three questions:1.What is the current situation of senior high school English teachers’ mastery and use of question chain? 2.What are the problems in question-chain design in high school English reading teaching based on the view of English learning activity? 3.How to optimize the question-chain design in reading according to the existing problems?The findings of the research are as follows: 1.Most teachers affirm the guiding significance of question-chain design based on the view of English learning activity.But there are some problems such as inadequate mastery and use of question chain due to insufficient attention;2.Some English teachers can integrate the view of English learning activity into the design of question chain.But the designed question chain is not enough to promote the development of students’ thinking.The logic of question chain design is not sufficiently related to the topic of discourse.The type of question chain is single,and the question-chain design lacks hierarchy and logic.The designed question chain cannot mobilize students’ emotional attitudes and make them think deeply.On the basis of finding and analyzing the problems,this paper puts forward the improvement strategies of reading question-chain design based on the view of English learning activity: 1.Strengthening teachers’ training on question-chain design.Teachers should realize the importance of reading question-chain design,master the designing method and actively apply it to teaching and research.2.Question-chain design should be closely related to the theme of discourse.Teachers should set up question circumstances to stimulate students’ thinking.3.Question-chain design reflects the hierarchy to develop students’ logical thinking ability.The author also applied the above strategies to optimize two English reading question-chain designs and interviewed some teachers and students about the optimized ones,which were recognized and affirmed by the interviewees.The following conclusions are drawn from the research: There are still some problems in the research and teaching practice of question-chain design in high school English reading teaching.But it can improve the quality of reading teaching and the quality of thinking of students and develop their core competency as long as teachers improve question-chain design ability and use level take improvement measures.
