Wang Guowei’s Calligraphy And Aesthetic Thought

During the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China,in the spread of Western culture,Chinese classical culture faced the transformation from tradition to modernity.A group of scholars represented by Wang Guowei promoted the modernization process of Chinese culture by integrating the commonalities of Chinese and Western cultures in the confrontation between Chinese and Western cultures.This paper explores the aesthetic ideas of Wang Guowei calligraphy from four aspects.Firstly,the foundation of the formation of Wang Guowei’s calligraphy aesthetic thought is sorted out;Secondly,it explores the Western aesthetic origin and content of Wang Guowei’s aesthetic thought of calligraphy.Again,analyze the kingthe relationship between the aesthetic thought of calligraphy and the creation of calligraphy;Finally,the value and limitations of Wang Guowei’s aesthetic thought of calligraphy are discussed.Under the cultural background of learning from the West and the East in the late Qing Dynasty,Wang Guowei’s calligraphy aesthetic thought inherited the traditional classical aesthetics vertically and integrated Western aesthetics horizontally.Although the aesthetic thought of Wang Guowei calligraphy is affected by the social and cultural background and personal choices and has not formed a logical and thorough system,the aesthetic thought of Wang Guowei calligraphy has made a successful attempt to integrate from the perspective of the commonality of two heterogeneous cultures,China and the West.Wang Guowei’s aesthetic thought of calligraphy promoted the transformation of calligraphy art from traditional to modern,and laid the foundation for the subsequent development of calligraphy aesthetics.
