Wang Duo was a master calligrapher of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties who shared the North and South with Dong Qichang,a representative of the Huating School. With political reasons and the diversified development of calligraphic approaches, the spread of Wang Duo’s calligraphy between the Qing Dynasty and the 1980 s failed to elicit strong echoes. His pioneering spirit of seeking newness and change was, however, continued to be inherited and developed over the next three hundred years, and was of positive significance in creating a pluralistic atmosphere in which ingenuity and clumsiness differed from each other and beauty and ugliness coexisted. In a Chinese society dominated by Confucianism,Wang Duo was ahead of his time in terms of aesthetic awareness, going against the aesthetic taste of "neutral" and pursuing the ultimate expression. This "impetuous" and "wild" aesthetic imagery was created by the times, and as a result, his calligraphy has been transformed into a more profound innovation. He was extremely creative in terms of structure, chapter style, and ink rhythm, leaving a rich "void" of images for future generations to interpret. In the 1980 s,calligraphers in the Central Plains renewed their interest in Wang Duo,and the calligraphic style of Wang Duo began to take the country by storm in high-frequency calligraphic exchange activities, contributing to the development of modern Chinese calligraphy. In the following half-century,this wave of Wang Duo fever not only did not candle out the light and exhaustion, but also steadily advanced in the auction market, exhibited works, and theoretical research. In this paper,we explore the dissemination and reception of Wang Duo’s calligraphy from the perspective of the ephemeral nature of the reception perspective. The reasons behind the evolution of Wang Duo’s ephemeral reception are summarized from various perspectives, including the medium of communication and its effects, the evolution of the criteria of calligraphic criticism, and the interpretation and construction of Wang Duo’s recipients, which are not only closely related to Wang Duo’s personal image and calligraphic art,but also inseparably related to the dramatic changes over the past three centuries.Wang Duo’s calligraphic art has gradually established its own meaning and value through the continuous dissemination and acceptance by society at large.
