From advocating "basic knowledge" and "basic skills" to "threedimensional objectives" and now "core literacy",China’s curriculum reform is moving toward supporting the development of high-quality education.On April 8,2022,the "English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition)" was officially announced,marking the official implementation of the core literacy curriculum policy.The core literacy in English consists of four main components: language proficiency,cultural awareness,learning ability,and thinking quality,and the language capability studied in this paper is the basis for each of the other components.At present,the development and cultivation status of English language proficiency among elementary school students in China,the extent to which practical teaching matches the curriculum standards,and whether the teaching practices of elementary school English highlight the value of the current English curriculum policy are yet to be considered.In this paper,questionnaires and interviews are used to investigate the current situation of English language proficiency development among upper elementary school students.The author compares relevant literature at home and abroad,extracts the five major aspects of listening,speaking,reading,writing and reading abilities,and based on this,designs a research instrument and conducts a survey with upper elementary school students and front-line English teachers in H city as the research subjects.The whole paper is divided into five chapters.Chapter one is the introduction,which briefly introduces the source of the topic,the purpose of the study,the significance of the study,reviews the related literature at home and abroad,explains the concepts of "core literacy" "language proficiency" and "elementary language proficiency" in this study,and compares the theoretical basis of the existing research.Chapter two focuses on the current situation of English language proficiency development among elementary school students,proposes a research question,designs a survey instrument for teachers and students based on the question,collects materials and analyzes the findings.This chapter provides a detailed analysis of the research methodology and research ideas,introduces the tools used in the study and the research survey plan arrangement,conducts in-depth surveys and tests,semistructured interviews with teachers and students,and analyzes the results of data processing on the current English language status of upper primary and secondary school students in actual teaching.Chapter three presents the results of the English language proficiency survey in elementary school,and the analysis of the problems of English language proficiency development in elementary school and their causes.The data results are analyzed from three aspects: students’ understanding and perception of English language proficiency,teachers’ understanding and perception of English language proficiency,and influencing factors,respectively.Chapter four analyzes the problems that emerged in the study and proposes effective teaching strategies to address the problems.Chapter five summarizes the reflections and outlook of the study to provide inspiration for similar studies in the future.The study of English language proficiency in elementary school helps school English teachers to think about practical teaching problems and solutions in their daily English teaching practices,and further clarifies the limitations of the study and the issues to be studied. |
