Research On The Problem Of Inferior Currency In Sui And Tang Dynasties

Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty was faced with the problem of private casting and the circulation of old money in the previous dynasties after established the nation.After the unification of the North and the South united,he hurriedly opened up the local casting money,leading to the frequent occurrence of the stolen casting,but on the whole in a controllable state.After Emperor Yang ascended the throne,because of the local casting money problem has not been able to solve,coupled with the limitations of the severe punishment and the law itself,also he did not pay enough attention to the currency system,inferior currency has developed to the irreparable stage.Before the An Shi Rebellion,due to the mistakes of the coinage policy in the Tang Gaozu period,this problem first appeared.In the reign of Emperor Gaozong of Tang dynasty,the problem of inferior currency was further aggravated,and even in the reign of Emperor Xuanzong,there was a suggestion to legalize private casting.After the An Shi Rebellion,in the first year of the Tang Dezong Jianzhong(780 AD),which was the boundary that announced the problem of stolen casting caused by false money and "uncertain money price" have been past,and then the problem of inferior currency was related to the problem of money shortage.The problems of inferior currency in Sui and Tang dynasties had three characteristics: firstly,the terms were diversified,the Sui dynasty was influenced by the previous dynasties,while the Tang dynasty had more than ten terms,they can be divided into two main categories,the first category is to take copper reduced weight money,the second category is folk imitation money;secondly,the origin and circulation were regional.The origin and circulation range of inferior currency in Sui and Tang Dynasties had been moving southward,which was related to the original economic foundation,the southward shift of economic center and the special geographical location of the south;thirdly,the regulation measures are systematic,compared with the previous dynasties,Sui and Tang dynasties are the master,who not only take strict measures,but also relaxation measures.The problem of inferior currency not only affected the monetary system of "Money and Silk" in the Sui and Tang dynasties,the production and life of common people and the normal trade of small producers in cities,but also deepened people’s understanding of currency.
