A Chinese-English Translation Report Of National Standard For Casting Terminology (Excerpts)

Improvement in science and technology have led to ever closer cooperation and communication between China and other countries.Translation,as a medium of cooperation and communication among different countries,bears increasingly daunting tasks.While translation in the field of science and technology is playing a crucial role,the current translation in this field remains under-qualified.Besides,the communication quality,especially in science and technology texts,is often affected due to such differences between English and Chinese as sentence patterns.A translator is thus saddled with great challenges when dealing with the two languages.The report probes into the translation of paraphrase of casting terminology in science and technology texts.Translating the paraphrase of casting terminology requires not only profound bilingual skills,but also professional knowledge in this field.It's a must for translators to achieve accurate understanding and fluent expressions.Based on the previous research about science and technology texts in terminology of text structure,sentence structure,translation skills and other aspects,the paper adopts Nida's functional equivalence theory as the guiding principle and uses examples to examine strategies used in the translation of the paraphrase of casting terminology from two perspectives: translation of attributive structures and translation of subjectless sentences.The report finally comes to conclusion from three aspects.First,professional knowledge is the prerequisite to translate paraphrase of casting terminology.Second,the author finds that if the attribute is not long in Chinese,syntactic equivalence in functional equivalence theory can be achieved by translating it directly into pre-attribute in English,and that if the attribute is long in Chinese,syntactic equivalence has to give way to functional equivalence by translating it into a post-positive attribute in English.Third,such methods as passive voice and sentences with subjects can beused in the translation of subjectless sentences.
