Fast and accurate person recognition is the basis of our communication with others, and also the premise of social success.Traditional research on person recognition mainly focuses on visual and auditory, especially face recognition, which has been discussed a lot in both cognitive behavior and physiological level. These discussions not only reveal the perceptual processing of person recognition but also provide some new ideas for person recognition. In these different from the habitual person recognition research we focus on the person recognition characteristics in the text.Through a series of researches on person recognition in text,it is found that the background story related to the text has a certain influence on person recognition in text processing.According to the social preference hypothesis, when reading a text, the more similar the characters are to the readers, the more likely readers will prefer the similar characters. This similarity,in turn, leads to increased interest in text material that contains characters similar to ours.Among them, people tend to show a social preference for characters with the same gender and age as themselves. Therefore,in this study, gender and age are used as identity indicators to examine the impact of identity characteristics in the background stories in the text.In addition, some studies have found that the processing of social information also affects the processing of person recognition to a certain extent. These studies report that it is hard to make comparisons between people identified when they have similar social identities. Therefore, the role of social information in person recognition in the text is also one of the parts we focus on.This study will use eye movement tracking technology to explore the relationship between person recognition and background story, character age, character gender and social information in the text. This paper mainly focuses on whether the matching degree of gender and age(the consistency degree of social identity features)will affect the character recognition in the text.In the process of person recognition in the text, this paper demonstrates whether background story has an impact on person recognition and whether social information(social words)in the text has an impact on person recognition. In addition,in order to explore the influence of background stories on person recognition, all subjects were divided into two groups according to whether they read background stories or not,and conducted experiments respectively to explore the above questions. This study is divided into two experiments. In experiment 1,we asked the subjects to read a background story(which mentioned characters and their relationships in the text)before the eye movement experiment, and then conducted a formal eye movement experiment to explore the influence of social information and characters’ social identity information on text person recognition. In experiment 2,the subjects did not read the background story, but only carried out eye movement experiment and read the text material.Through the above experiments,we found that: in Experiment 1,in terms of early lexical processing indicators(first fixation time, gaze time),the contrastive contextual condition showed longer processing time than the non-contrastive contextual condition. The same result was also found in the analysis of the late discourse integration stage(total fixation time). Moreover,in the late stage of discourse integration,as for the second processing time,we found that social identity features(gender and age)in the target area required longer processing time in the case of inconsistency than in the case of consistency. Finally, compared with non-contrastive context,in contrastive context, the processing time of identity consistent was significantly smaller than that of identity inconsistent. It can be seen that social information and identity features information of characters in background stories have certain influence on person recognition in discourse. This effect is particularly strong when social comparisons exist and when the identity information detected is consistent. In addition, this effect was significantly reduced in Experiment 2,suggesting that the background story is an important intelligence source for person recognition in texts. |
