There are many kinds of background cues in face-to-face communication,through which people can identify the emotional state of others.But,these contextual cues do not exist in social media.Emoticons are often used as contextual cues to emphasize the emotional information of this communication channel.Research shows that emoticons can help to perceive others’ emotions more accurately.However,in the process of text-based communication,it is not clear whether the understanding of the whole information depends on the valence of the text language or the valence of emoticons.Therefore,it is necessary to explore the influence of text language and emoticons on other people’s emotion recognition in social media.There are four behavioral experiments in this study,all of which adopt the paradigm of emotional consistency.Experiment 1 explored the effects of text language(positive,negative)and emoticons(positive,negative)on emotion recognition of others in the order of(text language + emoticons).So does this effect differ due to the order in which text language and emoticons are presented? In experiment 2,the order of presentation was changed to further explore the influence of text language(positive,negative)and emoticons(positive,negative)on others’ emotional recognition.Experiment 3 explored the effects of text language in different contexts(positive social emotional orientation,negative social emotional orientation,positive task orientation,negative task orientation)and emoticons(positive,negative)on others’ emotional recognition,in the order of presentation(text language + emoticons).So does this effect differ due to the order in which text language and emoticons are presented? Experiment4 continued to explore the influence of text language in different contexts(positive social emotional orientation,negative social emotional orientation,positive task orientation,negative task orientation)and emoticons(positive,negative)on others’ emotional recognition.The presentation order was emoticons + text language.Through four behavioral experiments,the first,text language has a greater impact on the recognition of other people’s emotions than emoticons in social media;second,regardless of the order in which text language and emoticons are presented,text language has a greater impact on the recognition of other people’s emotions than emoticons;third,regardless of whether the context of text language is social emotionoriented or task oriented Text language still has a greater impact on the recognition of other people’s emotions than emoticons.
