A Report On E-C Translation Of Indonesia’s Foreign Policy And Grand Strategy In The 21st Century (Excerpts)

The report is based on the translation of Indonesia’s Foreign Policy and Grand Strategy in the 21 st Century by Vibhanshu Shekhar.With the rise of the Asian powers and the Indo-Pacific region,the East Asian hemisphere has been pushed to the forefront of global strategic discussions,and new regional formations and regional alliances have emerged.Indonesia is one of the key powers in the global transformation.It is a typical political text with clear logic and well structure.Metaphor is an important tool for politicians to express their views and make their positions clearly.Politics without metaphors is like a fish without water,a paper written by linguist Thompson,clearly illustrates the importance of conceptual metaphors in the field of politics.In the process of translation,the author found that there is a large amount of conceptual metaphors,while the accuracy of metaphorical translation is the key to the transmission of information in the source text to target readers.Therefore,this report discusses the classification of the metaphors in the text.The numerous metaphorical phenomena in the text,the rich political and economic information and the highly specialized words make it difficult to be understood by the readers.How to deliver the source text in a rigorous and objective way and reproduce the mapping mechanism of conceptual metaphors become the main difficulty of this translation project.Based on the conceptual metaphor theory and the mapping mechanism of conceptual metaphors,this paper summarizes the difficulties of metaphor translation into three categories: 1.retain-domain mapping;2.substitute-domain mapping;3.delete-domain mapping.In view of the characteristics of the text,the author further refines the above three types of metaphorical translation difficulties into single-word terms and phrase-terms that enables readers to better understand the conceptual metaphors in political discourse by discussing typical challenges encountered in rendering terminological translation.Through this translation practice,the author has gained a further understanding of the characteristics of conceptual metaphors and metaphorical translation of political texts.Meanwhile,it’s expected that this report can serve as reference for translators of political texts and conceptual metaphorical translation in the future.
