| In 1950s-1960s,under the background of US-Soviet Cold-War and cross-strait confrontation, the circle of literature and art in Chinese Taiwan remained depressed. However, with the aid of the United States,Western Modernism also entered Chinese Taiwan and then some literary publications came into being, raising the banner of promoting modernism. In the tide of the times, young writers such as Yu Tiancong,Xu Guoheng and Liu Guosong founded Essay Collection.Essay Collection, from the standpoint of the Chinese people, the times, and the youth, brought together many aspiring modernist intellectuals of the time. Therefore,in the field of Essay Collection, there were mainly three literary and art groups, one was the official literary and art school led by Ren Zhuoxuan, the other was the modernist intellectual led by Yu Tiancong, the last one was modernist intellectuals of Hong Kong literary circle such as Ma Lang.Among the modernist intellectuals, there were modernist poets of the three major poetry societies, modernist painters such as the May Painting Association, and co-editors of Essay Collection, such as Yu Tiancong. In the depressed mood, following the trend of modernism has become the consensus of modernist intellectuals in Taiwan and Hong Kong.In Essay Collection, the interaction between the official literati and the modern intellectuals was actually a contest between political despotism and artistic consciousness, which was manifested in an incomplete antagonistic relationship.Modern intellectuals affirmed the realistic orientation in the debate, believing that they should combine modern, traditional and reality, and be alert to the extreme behavior of overall westernization and paying too much attention to form.In addition,in Essay Collection, there is a left-wing undercurrent hidden among the modernists, with Chen Yingzhen as the representative. He had similarities with the spiritual dilemma of modernist colleagues, but with a layer of hidden depression,he set his eyes on the left, which really broke through the ideological imprisonment of the Chinese Nationalist Party and the fog of western modernism. |
