In recent years,with the escalation of global environmental issues,there has been increasing awareness and concern for the environment among people.Environmental news plays a vital role in providing the public with the latest updates on environmental changes and facilitating the exchange of experiences related to environmental protection.By translating environmental news,language and cultural barriers can be overcome,enabling people from different countries and regions to comprehend the similarities and differences of global environmental challenges,which can help individuals participate more effectively in the cause of environmental protection.The report is based on a corpus of 11 environmental news articles from the “Climate and Energy” section of The New York Times from June 2021 to December 2021,providing coverage of environmental issues,including climate change,air pollution,marine pollution,and species decline.Based on Vermeer’s Skopos theory,the report summarizes the translation methods and techniques adopted by the environmental news text under the guidance of the three rules of Skopos theory,so as to resolve the difficulties encountered in the translation process and to ensure that the resulting translation is both accurate and professional.Given the purpose of conveying information in a clear and concise manner in environmental news translation and the disparities that exist between the English and Chinese languages,the translator,under the guidance of the skopos rule,adopts the translation techniques of annotation,division,and omission to address translation problems in terminology,idioms and long sentences,so as to facilitate comprehension and enhance the reader’s ability to access and assimilate information,thereby achieving effective communication.Moreover,guided by the coherence rule,translation techniques such as restructuring,addition,and voice conversion are adopted to solve the problems of voice and complex sentences to ensure the translation both comprehensible and acceptable.Additionally,the translator endeavors to remain faithful to the original authors’ ideas and intentions,utilizing methods such as literal translation and free translation for problems such proper nouns and meaning extension guided by the fidelity rule,so as to ensure the translation remains faithful to the source text while also considering the cultural background of the target text readers.Through the translation practice,the translator realizes that Skopos theory can provide effective guidance for the translation of environmental news.By adhering to the rules outlined by the theory,the quality of the translation can be improved and the communicative purpose can be more effectively achieved.Additionally,the translator hopes to provide some experience and reference for the subsequent translation of English environmental news through the translation practice report. |
