James Rosenquist’s formal language is unique.Popular images are the basic content,non-logicality is the key element,image collage is the important feature,and field construction is the distinctive feature.He is good at extracting popular images and social information,and relies on imagination and creativity to reconstruct the relationship between objects by means of collage,deformation and reorganization.Rosenquist’s paints works of social thinking in a realistic way.The unique juxtaposition technique obscures the meaning of the images,and the objects turn to symbols with symbolic metaphors.It guides the audience to look at the familiar objects with a new perspective,and generate ideological collisions with the audience.This thesis is mainly composed of three parts: introduction,principal argument and conclusion.The introduction leads to the origin of the research,summarizes the significance,current situation and methods of the research.The principal argument is consist of three sections: the first section explains the process of James Rosenquist’s artistic style,which from the perspective of his growth and study experience;the secon one from four perspectives propose the formal language features of Rosenquist’s works:the application of non-logical formal language,the reconstruction of popular images,the transformation of collage and the construction of materialized domain.In the part of non-logical formal language application,it discusses five aspects: "size and orientation","realism and anti-perspective","color and colorless" and "image segmentation".It analyzes how Rosenquist changes the conventional mode of image,and enriches the connotation with new forms of expression.In the third section,I combines the methods with personal experiences,expounds the application of Rosenquist’s formal language in watercolor painting,and explores more possibilities for paintings.In the conclusion,I consider the prospect of Rosenquist’s formal language research.This paper analyzed the formal language of Rosenquist’s painting.I discussed Rosenquist’ paintings through the collection of data,and combined personal practical experience to bring some reference significance to the watercolor painting.
