Reasons And Coping Strategies For Weak Logic Of Target Language In Chinese To English Consecutive Interpretation

Logical expression in target language is the basis of listeners’ understanding of speech content.Thus,logic is pivotal to the quality of interpretation.In Chinese to English consecutive interpretation,lacking logic in target language is always a challenge for interpreters since the mindsets behind two languages are different.This paper,based on case analysis,aims to study the logic problems in Chinese to English consecutive interpretation,to discuss the reasons behind these logic problems and to offer some coping strategies.First,this paper expounds the importance of logics in Chinese to English consecutive interpretation.It sets forth the essence of interpretation as logical activity,illustrating that it’s feasible to see the logic problems through the formal logic’s view.After the case study and the interpreter’s performance,this paper analyses the existing logic problems in target language by grouping them into three basic constitutes of logic,which are concepts,judgement and reasoning.Then this paper identifies the reasons in the process of listening and analyzing,notetaking and outputting,and tries to give coping strategies according to the reasons.In summary,there are logic problems where the logic of the interpretation varies from that of the original speech in regard with concept,judgement and reasoning.This is attributed to inefficient analytical listening,note-taking and expression.Hence,four coping strategies are put forward.First,I need to be fully prepared for tasks and enlarge the range of preparing.Second,consciously use logic tools to comprehend and analyze the text.Third,when taking notes,use proper symbols and improve the structure of notes.Fourth,based on differences between the Chinese and English language,I need to practice more effective strategies to give clear and accurate interpretation.The author hopes that this paper will help other interpreters with similar logic problems in Chinese to English consecutive interpretation and prompt them to focus on outputting logical interpretation.
