Analysis Of And Coping Strategies For Lack Of Explicitness In Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting

Explicitness is a common strategy adopted by interpreters in interpretation practice,and it is of great importance to the output of high-quality interpreting.Due to the characteristics of Chinese language,which focuses on "meaningfulness",the language presented is often loosely connected with logic and the content of expressions is relatively obscure.When lacking in Explicitness,interpretating is often confused with logic,fragmented with information and rigid with expressions,which will hinder the audience’s understanding.Therefore,based on the case of "Urbanization: Global Trends and Issues in China" and Hu Kaibao’s theory,this paper analyzes the problems of insufficient explicitness in the case,summarize the causes and propose corresponding strategies.The paper classifies the lack of explicitness into " cultural information explicitness " and "conceptual meaning explicitness " at the level of insufficient conceptual functional information explicitness ";failure to distinguish primary and secondary information","misuse/absence of logical connectives" and "unspecified indicative pronouns" at the level of discourse functional information,and "improper handling of intention" and "poor communication with speaker " at the level of interpersonal functional information.By analyzing specific cases,the paper summarizes four major causes of inadequate explicitness which are: insufficient discernment,inefficient note-taking,poor awareness of explicitness,and lack of communicative awareness.Finally,the paper proposes corresponding strategies to address the above causes: first,strengthen discernment to reorganize the source language;second,clarify the logic and optimize the structure of notes;third,strengthen monitoring and improve the awareness of explicitness;fourth,take the initiative to communicate with speakers to improve the preparation.
