With the development of economic globalization, Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) enterprises and universities in China are now having more frequent exchanges and cooperation with the outside world. In order to promote the internationalization of Traditional Chinese Medicine, related exchanges and publicity activities are very necessary. During these activities, the interpretation of Traditional Chinese Medicine plays an important role in the effective and sound communication between the Chinese side and the foreign side. The research on Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) translation and interpreting has become a focus of many TCM universities and the industry. This report is based on the Chinese-English consecutive interpretation for former Irish premier Bertie Ahern’s visit to Jiangzhong Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. in June, 2014, which is an interpreting practice related to Traditional Chinese Medicine. The author analyzed the preparations for the interpreting task and the whole process of the task, and evaluated the quality of the overall interpreting performance on the basis of Daniel Gile’s effort models. Upon evaluation and reflection, the author pointed out four points needing interpreters’ attention in dealing with similar interpreting tasks, namely thorough preparation of the subject knowledge, effective communication between the interpreter and the client, good note-taking and good psychological quality. On the basis of this TCM interpreting practice and other TCM interpreting literature, the author analyzed the difficulties in TCM interpreting from the perspective of interpretation learners. The difficulties are due to the complicated theoretical system of TCM, the varieties of TCM terminology and the lack of practical knowledge. The author also introduced corresponding coping strategies to solve the difficulties. With the writing of this report, the author hopes to make up for the shortcomings of this practice and improve the interpretation quality in the future, particularly in the field of TCM interpreting. In addition, the author also hopes that this report can provide some references for those who conduct the work of TCM interpreting in the future.
