| The collection of short stories Taipei People is Pai Hsien-yung’s representative work.Fourteen short stories in the book are full of homesickness,telling stories with China cultural characteristics,reflecting China’s traditional culture and customs,and shaping various characters with distinct personalities.This paper will focus on the translation of the unique cognitive style of this work.As a new genre of stylistics that explores the style of texts,cognitive stylistics is an interdisciplinary subject that crosses linguistics,literary studies and cognitive science,and developed rapidly abroad in 1990 s.Cognitive stylistics focuses on the cognitive structure and cognitive process of language analysis and language form choice,which provides a more systematic and detailed description and explanation for discourse and its interpretation than traditional theoretical disciplines such as stylistics or linguistics,and also brings more novel and comprehensive theoretical and methodological enlightenment for literary translation studies.The co-translators of Taipei People all point out that translation is not the job of carbon copy,so we should look at the translation strategies from a more dynamic and comprehensive perspective,and look at the translation’s spreading of the original spirit and the continuation of the original life.This paper will discuss the creativity of the English version of Taipei People from the perspective of cognitive stylistics,and explore the cognitive style of the co-translated English version.As an applied research of cognitive stylistics in the field of translation,this paper will be based on the analytical category and principles of cognitive stylistics,and reveal the cognitive style of translation by describing and comparing the cognitive strategies and cognitive processes of Pai Hsien-yung’s Taipei People and its English version more deeply and comprehensively.In the framework of cognitive stylistics,cognitive style is defined as the interaction between systematic construal operation and prominent cognitive principles.Through the analysis of the construal operation and cognitive principle of the translated version,this paper finds that: 1)the co-translators always keep the consideration of coherent construal operation in the process of translation;2)On the basis of retaining certain heterogeneity,realizing optimal relevance and cognitive increment,the co-translators also reduce readers’ unnecessary cognitive burden through diversified construal operations,and convey the unique spirit and style of the original text as a whole.In view of the special thematic significance and literary value of Taipei People,this paper hopes to reveal the different cognitive strategies adopted by the translators to achieve the translation purpose,and provide reference for the future foreign translation of China literature,so that the English translation of contemporary China literature,including the English translation of Taiwan Province literature,can be better presented to English-speaking world. |
