Landscape painting and garden design,with their unique Eastern charm,have become important carriers of traditional Chinese culture.In the Song Dynasty,the artistic forms,construction methods,expressive techniques,and ideological connotations of both had already matured.Scholars have long noticed the interconnection between landscape painting and garden design,but related discussions have mainly focused on the Ming and Qing Dynasties,with the situation in the Song Dynasty often being vaguely described.This article aims to explore the communication and interaction between landscape painting and garden design in the Song Dynasty.Firstly,the article reviews the connection between landscape imagery and gardens before the Song Dynasty;secondly,it outlines new changes in landscape painting and garden design during the Song Dynasty,and reviews the involvement of landscape painters in garden construction;thirdly,by combining research from architecture,art history,and other fields,the article conducts comparative analysis of the rock formations,water features,and plant scenery in both landscape painting and garden design,with a focus on the influence of garden aesthetics on landscape painting in the Song Dynasty;fourthly,the article explores the similarities in creative techniques between landscape painting and garden design from three aspects: spatial layout,creative methods,and viewing methods;fifthly,the article discusses the consistency in aesthetic ideals and value pursuits between Song Dynasty landscape painting and garden design.Finally,the article summarizes the interaction and influence between landscape painting and garden design in terms of the elements of scenery,the similarity in creative techniques,and the consistency in ideological aesthetics.Landscape painting and garden design complemented each other and jointly promoted the prosperity of Song Dynasty culture during their development.
