| The introduction of Western scientific sketching practices in the late Qing Dynasty and in the early Republic China more than a hundred years ago resulted in the commencement of a trend in garden-themed sketching practices.There was never a lack of outstanding artists ever since the practice had emerged,sustained by the large number of both artworks created through sketching or created on the basis of sketching as the preparation.The study examines the trend in landscape and garden sketching in response to the phenomenon,with emphasis on the developmental context of sketching of garden and landscapes,as well as the evolution in the painting form of landscape and garden paintings.This is to address the absence of studies and research on the particular topic as well as providing theoretical supplementation to the topic.Formulated on the basis of prior successes and theoretical achievements of predecessors and backdropped against the context of prior eras and past ethos,the article identifies different phases of development and alternation of characteristics of garden and landscape sketches according to historical and political contexts.The analysis of reasons for the formation and current development are carried out consecutively,whilst the article also reveals the realism embedded in the art of Chinese garden and landscape paintings,as well as clarifying the significant influence of western ideologies of sketching on the transformation of the art style.The influence of the sketching experience,theoretical concepts of respective representative groups of modern and contemporary garden landscape painters on the overall presentation of garden landscape paintings ever since the upsurge in the trend of sketching at late Qing Dynasty towards the beginning of the Republic of China are analysed collectively within the article.This is done through the exploration of political appeal,societal norm,aesthetic consciousness and cultural trends as the underlying causes for the change in pen and ink style,color application,composition and perspective of garden landscape artists in their sketches.The benefits and detriments in the reformation of contemporary Chinese paintings and art education,as well as the influence of Western ideologies on garden and landscape sketching are considered through dialectical thinking.This is intended to prompt extensive thinking regarding the significance of sketching to the development of garden landscape painting,as well as the evolution and developmental path of garden landscape art in the future. |
