The translation of Nabokov’s works in China began in the early 1980 s,which constituted the objective conditions for Su Tong to accept Nabokov’s influence.Su Tong’s acceptance of Nabokov’s creative aesthetics was conscious and active, and Su Tong was not only full of favorable feelings towards the detailed descriptions and textual expressions in his works, but also deeply inspired by them in terms of narrative and literary concepts. However,Su Tong also made creative transformations based on his own literary personality and traditional Chinese culture, thus forming the unique narrative style and aesthetic characteristics of his novels. From the level of acceptance,Nabokov’s poetic thinking has inspired Su Tong’s creation. In terms of the concept of truth,Su Tong accepts that writers should explore human nature through literary creation;in terms of the concept of time,Su Tong becomes more interested in the metaphysical and non-linear existence of time;in terms of the concept of ethics,Su Tong also rejects stereotypical preaching and values ethics in literature.Su Tong also learns from Nabokov in terms of specific creative methods, drawing more material from his personal memory and using his hometown and nostalgia as important creative resources. He not only consciously pursues strange language to create more literary works, but also tries his best to maximize irony and parody in his narrative techniques, using complex imagery and metaphors to carry profound connotations, forming his unique aesthetic style.Su Tong’s acceptance of Nabokov is not entirely passive, but a creative transformation of his writing resources.Su Tong tries to deal with the relationship between the exploration of human nature and history and reality, and agrees with the non-linear view of time;the narrative time he specifically presents in his novels is a state of reincarnation rather than a single line of advancement. At the same time,Su Tong’s novels have many detailed and vivid metaphorical designs,a gloomy and prolonged narrative tone, and mysterious and poignant imagery expressions that give his novels a unique southern aesthetic character. The reason behind the transformation is worth digging and thinking about.Su Tong and Nabokov were in different nationalities and times, and Su Tong’s memory and writing are imprinted with Chinese cultural traditions and have his own personality, which gives Su Tong the opportunity to contact and understand Nabokov’s creations, and also makes Su Tong’s interests and tendencies different from Nabokov’s.In conclusion,in the process of Sino-foreign literary exchange,Chinese contemporary writers are inevitably receptive to foreign literature, and Su Tong’s acceptance of Nabokov is one of the more typical cases. It is necessary to seriously understand and analyze the relationship between Chinese contemporary writers and foreign writers, contemporary novels and internationally influential literary works. In the process of acceptance,Chinese writers should firmly take a cultural stance, give full play to their own literary personality, selectively learn from and absorb the beneficial experiences of world literature, and strive to pursue equal dialogue and exchange with world literature. Therefore,it is still worth exploring how to view the acceptance and transformation of contemporary Chinese novels to foreign literary works.
