| In the field of interpreting, fluency is an important measure of the target language quality and interpreter’s linguistic competences.Although disfluency is common in interpreting,it can make the audience feel uncomfortable and fail to convey information effectively when it happens frequently. There are many different types of disfluency which are due to various causes and individual differences. It is therefore necessary to explore the causes and coping strategies of disfluency through a certain number of case studies.Based on the Mock Conference of the 4th Session of the Sino-French Seminar on Artificial Intelligence, this thesis is a case study on the disfluency phenomena in Chinese to French consecutive interpreting and the coping strategies.Using the disfluency classification system of Dai Zhaohui as reference, the author divides disfluency into three major categories--pause,repetition and self-correction.Several typical examples in the mock conference are selected to demonstrate the causes of disfluency, including inadequate language competence, poor speech habits,over-reliance on notes, lack of self-monitoring and mental stress, etc.Four strategies were provided by the author in order to address the aforementioned problems: note-taking improvement,self-monitoring,deverbalisation of source language, large amount of input and daily practice in the long term.It takes time to address disfluency problems occured during consecutive interpreting, but interpreters can ameliorate the delivery through skills and long-term practices. The author hopes that this thesis can help those who encounter disfluency problems in interpreting to improve their performance. |
