| Rich in content and variety, social norms during imperial China exerted a substantial influence on the nation itself and Asia at large. The relevant historical documents and manuscripts can help the academia get a fuller picture of what subject matters are concerned in these norms(such as laws and decrees)enacted during each dynasty, facilitating the research efforts of the imperial Chinese legal system and its evolution. As language evolves over time, however, these documents and their titles have become difficult to comprehend, either because of the changing of the semantics or of the syntax. The translator therefore needs to do extensive research to figure out what is meant by the original text under certain historical contexts, and adds logic connectives lost in the original text into the translated text.Besides, how to effectively translate cultural-loaded phrases of the titles is another challenge that needs to be fixed,as these phrases involve concepts unique to China but strange to English readers. The third challenge facing the translator is how to correctly use online resources and parallel texts for reference. The translator needs to cross-check the information searched,as its qualities can vary greatly and some may be rather misleading. |
