| The global game market revenue in 2021 exceeded US$170 billion as a result of economic development and the pandemic,Covid-19.This means digital games have become a part of the daily life for nearly 3 billion players worldwide,as well as an important contributor to today’s global entertainment industry.With the development of globalization and informationization,game localization has enabled game manufacturers to bring their game products to the world.To promote Chinese games overseas,researchers and practitioners also pay more attention to the process of game product localization.Against this background,this thesis compares existing theories and explores the multidimensional characteristics of the translated texts of role-playing games through a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches,while focusing on the causes behind their textual characteristics,in order to provide translation practitioners with methodological guidance for the English localization of Chinese games.Firstly,this thesis analyzes the similar dimensional characteristics of role-playing games texts from different regions with the help of multi-dimensional analysis,and finds that the multi-dimensional characteristics of role-playing games show substantial similarity,with most of them featuring high interaction and high persuasion;secondly,by comparing the dimensional characteristics of original game texts with those of translated ones,this thesis finds that translated game texts have higher interactivity,and the translated texts of Japanese games tend to be more persuasive after the process of English localization.Finally,with the help of register analysis and corpus statistics,the thesis analyzes the reasons for the differences in dimensional features and suggests that future localization practitioners focus more on restructuring the contents into dialogues and describing character’s feelings by modals or suasive verbs to improve the interactivity and persuasiveness of the translated texts. |
