Pre-interpreting preparation for interpreters means acquiring more new knowledge or new information in a limited time, and the knowledge and information are crucial to ensure the quality of interpretation.During the interpretation process, interpreters analyze and explain the source language with native thinking tools which is different from the source language, and the noise carried by their native way of thinking can interfere with the understanding, which in turn causes loss in the information transmission process. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the relationship between trainee interpreters’ pre-interpreting and information loss, and to ask the following research questions: whether pre-interpreting is related to the missing information in the target language in the process of consecutive interpretation by trainee interpreters;how pre-interpreting affects the loss of conceptual information, interpersonal information, and discourse information in the translated language;and if pre-interpreting has an effect, what are the potential reasons for it.Twenty-four graduate students of MTI English interpretation at a foreign language university in northeast China were selected for the experiment, and the 24 trainee interpreters were randomly and equally divided into experimental and control groups. The trainee interpreters in the experimental group were carefully prepared before interpretation, while the members of the control group were not prepared, and post-interpretation interviews were conducted with the subjects of both groups after the test. The results of the test data and interviews showed that the effect of pre-interpreting on the missing information in the target language by the trainee interpreters’ translations was mainly reflected in the conceptual information and discourse information levels;the more adequate the pre-interpreting,the smaller the degree of missing conceptual and discourse information, while the degree of missing interpersonal information of the translated language is less affected by it;the potential reasons for the relationship between pre-interpreting and the missing of information in the trainee interpreters’ translations were terminology and subject familiarity.A high degree of familiarity with terms and topics facilitates their understanding,so that they can accurately grasp the information and finally express it freely;there is a limit to the influence of pre-interpreting on the degree of the missing information of trainee interpreters, and if they are not proficient in the content of pre-interpreting,the phenomenon of missing information in target language of trainee interpreters still exists. This study focuses on the relationship between trainee interpreters’ pre-interpreting and missing information in target language, which is of practical value as a guide for trainee interpreters’ interpretation practice process and a reference for interpretation teaching.
