The source text of this report is selected from The Age of AI: And Our Human Future, which explore artificial intelligence and the ways in which it is transforming human society, and what this technology means for all humanity. From this book, sentences containing dashes appear more frequently in Chapter 1 to Chapter 2,with37 sentences containing single dashes and 52 sentences containing double dashes. As an important form of punctuation in written language, the English dash carries a strong emotional content in the discourse and assumes an important grammatical and logical function, the role of the dash should not be underestimated, and it is quite different in both frequency and usage in written Chinese and English, which is bound to cause certain difficulties in translation practice. If we just copy the form of the original text in translation and ignore the role of these punctuation marks,it will not only cause mistranslation, but also make the translation obscure and incomprehensible, which is not in line with the target language’s writing habits. Therefore, this paper will focus on the typical problem of dash translation,in the light of cohesion theory, the report is addressed to the dash translation strategies.Based on the logical-semantic relations in the clause complex, this report attempts to analyze the translation examples within the three broad semantic groupings in expansion which could be divided into “elaboration”,“extension” and “enhancement”in specific contexts, summarize the conversion strategies of dashes under different types of semantic relations, give full play to the translator’s subjectivity, improve the readability of the translation, focus on logical cohesion, and adopt translation techniques such as omission, amplification and inversion.
