This is a report on E-C translation practice of the historical text-The Hundred Years War: England and France at War(Chapters 1 & 2).Guided by Nida’s theory of functional equivalence,the author classifies and analyzes the difficulties in translation from lexical,syntactic and textual levels,and summarizes related translation strategies and skills.Through a comprehensive analysis of the 24 cases,the author has drawn the following conclusion.At lexical level,translators ought to carry out information retrieval and verification to make the terms accurate and consistent.Translators should not be constrained by the part of speech in the source text and focus on natural and idiomatic collocations.The application of four-character structures also helps to make the target text vivid and expressive.At syntactic level,translators are supposed to notice the thinking patterns of different languages,and retain or adjust word order according to expressions of the target language to avoid translationese and guarantee its intelligibility.In terms of sentences with complex structures,translators should highlight the kernel sentences and achieve semantic reorganization according to their internal logic relations.At textual level,translators should clarify the reference of pronouns in the source text according to the context.Furthermore,it is crucial to add necessary historical background information to comprehend and translate the source text accurately and naturally.This translation report is expected to throw light on a better understanding of the Hundred Years’ War for Chinese researchers and provide reference for the translation of historical texts in the future.
