This experiment aims to explore the effect of the professional information density in the source language on the fluency of student interpreters in English-Chinese consecutive interpreting. The professional information density in the source language in this report is measured with preposition from linguistics. One preposition equals one piece of information, and the information containing terms is professional information. The fluency of student interpreters is analyzed from such four aspects as noncommunicative pause, repetition, revision and speech pace. The subjects of this experiment are 18 postgraduates majoring in English interpreting. The materials are two speeches from the same speaker Vaitea Cowan,a successful female entrepreneur, with the professional information density of 7.6professional info per minute and 11.6 professional info per minute respectively. This experiment mainly answers the following three questions: Does the professional information density in the source language influence the performance of student interpreters in English-Chinese consecutive interpreting? What effects does the professional information density in the source language have on the fluency of student interpreters in English-Chinese consecutive interpreting? Facing the changes in the professional information density in the source language, what strategies will student interpreters adopt?Through the analysis of the overall performance score, speech pace, and the frequency of non-communicative pause, repetition and revision and post-interpreting interview, the following conclusions are reached: The increase in professional information density has a negative impact on the overall performance of student interpreters. The increase in professional information density in the source language has a negative impact on the fluency of student interpreters. It is concluded that faced with the increase in professional information density, student interpreters adopted such strategies as omission, fuzzy interpretation, giving up note-taking,guessing and forecasting,to make their target language more fluent.Taking professional information density in the source language as the argument, this experiment aims to explore the changes in the fluency and the use of strategies of student interpreters in English-Chinese consecutive interpretation. This report not only contributes to the research of fluency in interpreting, but also has certain impacts on interpreting practice and teaching.
