Harari’s books, including Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind,Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow, and 21 Lessons for the 21 st Century, have had a profound global impact, closely tied to the core concept of "algorithm" within these works. In his writings,Harari employs "algorithm" as a cornerstone to explain biological evolution and social development, thus establishing his distinctive "philosophy of algorithms." Harari’s understanding and utilization of the concept of "algorithm" are heavily influenced by computer science, indicating a significant interconnection between the two fields. This paper explores Harari’s ideas on algorithms in depth. This paper is divided into three parts. The first part provides an introduction to the background, research status, and significance of the topic. It also presents an overview of the definition, types, and applications of computer algorithms, along with an outline of their overall usage and importance in Harari’s trilogy. The second part analyzes the evolution of algorithms in both biological and social aspects as depicted by Harari, starting with an examination of objective reality. It further explores the potential emergence of algorithmic subjects, algorithmic societies, and master algorithm at the intersubjective level.Lastly,it delves into Harari’s use of algorithms to explain human consciousness, behavior, free will, and self at the subjective reality level. The third part begins with an analysis of the similarities, differences, and relationships between Harari’s algorithms and computer algorithms. It then examines the foundation of Harari’s algorithmic thinking, namely computability.Additionally,it explores the significance of Harari’s algorithmic ideas in the context of historical research, future philosophy, and contemporary society. Finally, the paper concludes by summarizing key insights and drawing a conclusion.Based on the research conducted in this paper, the following conclusions have been drawn:Firstly, the essence of computer algorithms is technological, while the essence of Harari’s algorithms is a psychological representation based on computer algorithms as templates. Not only are Harari’s algorithms themselves uncomputable and unoperable, but the world they are based on cannot be fully reduced to computational processes.Secondly,Harari asserts that the essence of the world is algorithmic and that the evolution of the world is the evolution of algorithms. However,Harari’s algorithms exist solely in his mind, and his arguments do not prove that the world’s nature is fundamentally algorithmic.Thirdly, from a positive perspective,Harari’s adoption of algorithmic concepts to address humanistic issues essentially reflects a scientistic inclination.Conversely,Harari’s algorithmic concepts not only urge us to reconsider the practice of studying humanistic problems solely through a scientistic lens but also serve as a cautionary reminder with relevance and significance to contemporary society.
