The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education in China emphasize the overall goal of improving students’ learning ability, enhancing their language ability, setting correct goals, ensuring interest, actively participating in English practical teaching activities, paying attention to listening, engaging in communication, daring to try, learning to explore independently, and achieving the goal of being good at learning.Improve students’ reading ability while also enhancing their ability to use language. Therefore,English reading teaching is an important part of English teaching. However, there are still many shortcomings in reading teaching at present.Teachers only focus on students’ skill training while neglecting the cultivation of their reading ability. In the actual teaching process, teachers focus on analyzing long and difficult sentence patterns, syntax and grammar, and translation exercises, which limits students’ independent learning ability and the development of reading performance.Project based learning mode is a systematic and regular teaching method that mainly explores complex and real problems. After exploration, students plan and implement project tasks independently, which can also cultivate their ability to learn independently.During this process, students have gained a comprehensive understanding of the required knowledge and skills and are presented with carefully designed project works at the end. Therefore, based on the problems encountered in middle school English reading teaching mentioned above, this study takes a projectbased learning model as the perspective and selects 49 students from Class 3,Grade 1of M Middle School in Changchun City. The research period is 18 weeks, and the research methods include questionnaire survey, interview, and testing to explore middle school English reading teaching.Intended to answer the following questions:(1)In the middle school English reading teaching, how implementing a projectbased learning model?(2)What is the influence of applying project-based learning mode to English reading classes on students’ autonomous learning ability?(3)What are the changes in students’ reading scores when project-based learning is applied to English reading classes? This study includes two rounds of action research. Some problems emerged in the first round of action research: students are difficult to master the method of projectbased learning mode, are not clear about the specific steps, teachers teach too much in teaching, and ignore students’ autonomous learning ability. The author made some adjustments in the second round of action research to solve these problems: teachers will take students as the main body, establish more attractive and challenging projects, and enrich and broaden students’ classroom content.Through the analysis of the data collected from the test by SPSS software, some research results show that: first, after action research, students’ autonomous learning ability has improved, which can be reflected in seven dimensions: learning motivation, learning content, learning time, learning methods, learning process, learning results, and learning environment.Secondly,it improves students’ English reading scores, which can be reflected in their English reading scores, reading strategies, and selflearning abilities.
