The "Other" Problem In Beauvoir’s Feminism

Beauvoir was a leading figure in the second wave of feminism.As one of the few female philosophers,Beauvoir’s "The Second Sex" comprehensively and profoundly discusses female issues.She clearly put forward the view that "women are the other",revealed the fact that women were oppressed in history,and profoundly analyzed the reasons causing the situation of women’s other.Based on Beauvoir’s view that women are the other,and on the text of the Second Sex,this paper expands Beauvoir’s feminist thought from three parts.The first part expounds the theoretical source and ideological connotation of Beauvoir’s concept of "the other".Hegel’s master slave dialectics,Heidegger’s co-existence with others and Sartre’s existentialist ethics all provide theoretical resources for Beauvoir’s "other" thought.When Beauvoir applied the concept of "the other" to the situation of women,it meant the objectification and objectification of women.The ideological connotation of "women are others" means that women are regarded as objects.The second part elaborates Beauvoir’s analysis of the causes of women’s "other" situation.Beauvoir first criticized the explanations of biological,psychoanalytic and historical materialism for the causes of women’s other situation,and then gave her own views directly based on the viewpoint of survivalist philosophy.But in fact Beauvoir’s analysis is heavily influenced by the materialist view of history.The third part expounds the feasibility of Beauvoir’s proposal to change the situation of the female "other".Mainly from the level of economic independence,personality independence.Beauvoir’s feminist views make us clear the historical situation of women and the causes of this situation,which is of great significance to women.Only when women are clear about their past can they look to the future better.
