The Kunqu opera The Story of the Jade Hairpin玉簪记written by Gao Lian高濂in the Ming明Dynasty has been active on the stage of traditional Chinese opera since its publication.Although the structure,artistic conception,and melody of the play were not well evaluated by various composers during the Ming and Qing清dynasties,it still frequently performed in the court and among the people for a long time.The spread of this drama for over 400 years has never been lost in the surging and competing legends of the Ming and Qing dynasties,indicating that the drama has a unique charm that is sought after by people.This paper focuses on the dissemination and acceptance of Gao Lian’s The Story of the Jade Hairpin during the Ming and Qing dynasties.Through the sorting and analysis of existing versions,opera anthologies,literati notes,performance archives,newspaper materials,and other literature,it clarifies the various links,channels,participants,acceptance,and influence in the dissemination and acceptance process of the play,striving to outline the detailed dissemination of The Story of the Jade Hairpin from the text to the performance,and reveal its unique artistic value.This article is divided into three chapters in addition to the introduction.The first chapter mainly explores the dissemination and acceptance of the text of The Story of the Jade Hairpin during the Ming and Qing dynasties.The first part conducts a comparative analysis of different versions to examine in detail the circulation of this drama in the entire publication and selection system.The second part analyzes the textual criticism of this drama by historical composers,and reveals the acceptance of the play among the composers.The third part is based on the influence of the text of this drama on the creation of later literati,exploring the adaptation and creation of the play by playwrights during the Ming and Qing dynasties.The second chapter mainly explores the dissemination and acceptance of the performance of The Story of the Jade Hairpin during the Ming and Qing dynasties.The first part of this chapter discusses the performance of this drama among the people,and explores the performance process of this drama among the people from literature such as literati notes,novels,and late Qing newspapers.The second part analyzes the performance of this drama in the Qing Dynasty palace,and explores the editing characteristics and value of the drama in the Qing Dynasty palace.The third chapter mainly explores the relationship between the dissemination and acceptance of The Story of the Jade Hairpin during the Ming and Qing dynasties,as well as the contemporary fashion and aesthetic mentality.The first part lists and analyzes the dissemination of this drama in Ming and Qing novels,folk songs,and entertainment literature.The second part analyzes the dissemination of theatrical illustrations in this drama from the perspective of visual media and its impact on readers’ visual acceptance and perception.The third part interprets the script connotation and dramatic expression of this drama from the perspective of the social background of the times,analyzes the specific manifestation of the lust space in the play,and its relationship with the expectations of readers and audiences,as well as the dramatic tension of the play.This explores the deeper aesthetic value of The Story of the Jade Hairpin,hoping that the play can be more valued by scholars and opera art circles.
