With the development of science and technology, global exchanges are becoming more extensive, among which geological translation plays an important role.Strengthening the research on translation methods and strategies of geological documents can improve the translation quality of such documents and facilitate international exchanges in geology. This report selected the first two chapters of the Specification of Geo-environmental Zonation Map of Anhui Province as translation materials. As the scientific text, the specification is characterized by many geological terms at the lexical level,non-subject and long and complex sentences at the syntactic level, and standardized form and fixed expressions at the textual level. With the guidance of Gu Zhengkun’s theory of Plurality and Complementarity of Translation Standards, the author elaborates on translation problems and their solutions at the three levels respectively, integrating specific translation standards like features of the source text and the English of science and technology. At the lexical level, the most desirable way for terms without standard translation is to make selections according to the source text.Adding annotations and free translation are also used at the cost of some proximity in form to achieve the best proximity in meaning. At the syntactic level,it is suggested to find or add subjects for non-subject sentences. For long and complex sentences, division and sequence adjustments are used to achieve the best syntactic proximity. At the textual level, terms, phrases and sentences should be translated based on the whole text to ensure the coherence and consistency of the translation for best stylistic proximity. The author hopes this report can provide a reference for scholars and students in geology and geological translation at home and abroad, and promote the development of methods and skills for translating geological documents. |
