During Yuan,Ming and Qing Dynasties, the central government established a system named Tusi as a local regime organization in order to manage the minority areas, played a significant role in the local governance. The operation of Tusi represented the identity relationship between the frontier minority and the dynastic government, this relationship also created a national identity formed over a long-period political mutual trust and cultural interaction between the two.The pledge of allegiance to Central dynasty played a main role when creating national identity of Shuixi Tusi during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Both the affirmation of the government of the Ming Dynasty and the affiliation of the Shuixi Tusi represented the two-way selection between central and local. The ends of Shuixi Tusi submitted to the central were basically to borrowed the power from the crown to protect their interests and pursue more of them, ultimately legitimizing their own local rule.At the same time, the central dynasty extended the national concept of "great unity" into the Shuixi Tusi and further strengthened the management of Shuixi area. This study on the national identity of the Shuixi Tusi in Guizhou during the Ming and Qing dynasties is divided into four chapters, focusing on the identification process, concrete manifestations and historical connotations of the state identity of the Shuixi Tusi in Guizhou during this period. The first chapter has a clearly overview of the development of Shuixi Tusi by describing its historical evolution in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The second chapter analyses the historical process of national identity of Shuixi Tusi, and dividing the process into three stages:embryonic stage, shaping stage and development stage. These three periods show the volatility and twists of its national identity. The third chapter elaborates on the historical connotations of the state identity of the Shuixi Tusi during the Ming and Qing dynasties, with territorial identity as a prerequisite for the state identity of Shuixi Tusi, and recognition of identity, economic identity, political identity and cultural identity as the sustaining links of the state identity of Shuixi Tusi during the Ming and Qing dynasties.Under the influence of these identity, the national identity of Shuixi tusi was constantly constructed and formed. The final section discusses the historical significance of the national identity of Shuixi Tusi during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The national identity of the Shuixi Tusi not only maintained the rule of the central government, but also strengthened the central dynasty’s administration of the Shuixi region and further maintained the unity of the multi-ethnic state. This study is aim to analyse the relevant historical facts on Shuixi Tusi of Guizhou from the perspective of national identity.By analysis, the features about the national identity of Shuixi Tusi in the Ming and Qing dynasties will be recognized, these features refer to attachment to the nation, the maintenance of state rule and cultural transmission. From the perspective of national identity to explore the Tusi, this study is to make a supplement to the research of Shuixi Tusi by exploring the above content.
