This report on translation practice is based on the Chinese-English translation of Chapter Four of Future Worksite(《未来工场》).Future Worksite is an academic monograph on modern information technology and future manufacturing written by Mr.Lan Jianping,Vice President of Zhejiang Development&Planning Institute.Chapter Four mainly demonstrates the technological view of the future worksite from two aspects:digital enabling technology and advanced manufacturing technology. The source text contains a large amount of professional knowledge in manufacturing technology and is often presented in the form of long sentences, which poses many hindrances to the translation process. Therefore, this report analyzes and addresses the challenges in the translation process from the perspective of long Chinese sentences.Guided by the cohesion and coherence theory and taking into account the linguistic differences between Chinese and English, the translator will apply various translation methods and techniques to solve the three major challenges encountered in the translation process: the implicit logical relations in Chinese run-on sentences, ambiguous subjects, and redundant information. To be specific, these problems have been solved respectively by adding linking constructions in run-on sentences,by adding subjects or changing subjects, and by omitting or combining redundant information. This translation practice report explores how to realize the cohesion and coherence in translating long Chinese sentences in academic sci-tech texts. It is hoped that this report can contribute to the “going out” of Chinese academics as well as the cause of Chinese-English sci-tech translation.
