| This is a report on the translation of Pandemics: The Basics by Elisa Pieri,of which Chapter five is the source text.Pandemics: The Basics mainly discusses origins and triggers,threats and impact of various pandemics and preparedness strategies.The source text uses various examples to describe the strengths and limitations of modeling and simulation for pandemic preparedness.Currently,the coronavirus is not over.With the continuous mutation of COVID-19 and the popularization of vaccination,China has entered a new stage of prevention and control.In the face of the uncertainty of the pandemic,the target text alleviates the Chinese public’s anxiety and offers some suggestions for COVID-19 response to some extent.The source text has strong logic.It is also full of formal words and long and complex sentences which are full of parentheses,clauses,and non-predicates.The translator found it difficult to address polysemous words,parentheses and attributive clauses due to the features of the source text above.This translation practice allows the translator to further recognize the purpose of translation and the use of various translation techniques when solving such problems in translating the information text through the Skopos theory.In the guidance of Skopos theory,the translator attaches great importance to the readers’ comprehension of information to effectively express the meaning.According to the three principles of Skopos theory,the translator has adopted translation techniques including addition,negation,generalization,shift in syntax,division and restructuring to address those difficulties to achieve the readability. |
