A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of The Attributive Clause In This Land Is Our Land Under The Guidance Of The Functional Equivalence Theory

In recent decades,due to the relative peace of world environment,population keeps growing.While the population carrying capacity and the total land areas are limited.The contradiction between human and land resources is becoming more and more acute and such unbalanced relationship is one of the major challenges all countries face.In order to achieve harmony between human and land,exploring how to resolve such problem of people concern becomes very important.The source text is excerpted from This Land is Our Land by Jedediah Purdy,a professor at Duke University School of Law.The book introduces the current tense relationship between human and land in America and how to restore the relationship.Since the original text belongs to scientific text,in which there are many attributive clauses,how to faithfully translate them into Chinese is difficult.And how to make the readers understand the information basically the same way as the author of the original text,and to achieve functional equivalence is one of the translation difficulties.Therefore,the translator chose functional equivalence theory to provide guidance for this translation report.In this report,the translator will follow Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory to explore the translation methods of the attributive clauses.In view of the differences between English and Chinese,the translator mainly adopts three translation skills: the first is combination,including preposition and mixture;the second is division,including antecedent repetition,antecedent omission and independent clause;the third is transformation,it means translating attributive clauses into the corresponding adverbial clause,including cause,result and purpose and so on.The translation of this project will enable Chinese readers to know about the tense relationship between human and land in America,broaden their horizons and raise their awareness of environmental protection.In addition,this translation practice will improve the translator’s translation ability and provide further reference value for the translation of similar themes.
