A Report On The Translation Of Nuclear Weapons Law:Where Are We Now?(Section K-l)

This is a report on the translation of Section K and L of Nuclear Weapons Law:Where Are We Now? co-authored by William H.Boothby and Wolff Heintschel von Heinegg.The source text mainly examines a variety of bilateral,multilateral and regional agreements related to nuclear disarmament and arms control,the best way to achieve nuclear security and the implications of international law for nuclear command,control and communications.The source text is featured by a wide use of nominalized structures and a great number of words with affective meanings and its language is organized carefully and strictly,which can be seen from the syntactic structures with many long sentences,many of which are resulted by the superposition of modifiers.How to deal with the nominalized structures,words with affective meanings and long sentences with restrictive modifiers have become the difficulties in this translation project.The original text is informative,and the main purpose of the translation is to convey the content.Therefore,the translator intends to use Peter Newmark’s communicative translation as the guidance and semantic translation as a supplementation,and apply translation techniques such as conversion,division,and diction,so as to accurately convey the information of the text,and at same time,pay attention to the target readers’ understanding and response and enhance the readability of the translation.This translation program is to help introduce the law relating to the possession,threat or use of nuclear weapons to the target readers,provides some reference in the related field,and at the same time to improve her translation ability to solve practical problems in translation through the application of translation theories and techniques.
