A Report On The Translation Of How To Navigate Life(Chapters 1 & 2)

This report is an English-Chinese translation report.The translation practice material is selected from chapters one and two of How to Navigate Life.Before the epidemic,competition in all sectors of Chinese society was fierce.Since the outbreak of COVID-19,many enterprises have gradually closed down,making people realize the importance of “stability”.As a result,all kinds of competition are intensifying in the post-epidemic era and people have to struggle to gain a foothold in this society.And this is not conducive to alleviating the main contradiction in Chinese society.Therefore,appropriate measures are needed to alleviate this phenomenon.The book first introduces people’s anxiety and fear in the competitive society,then analyzes the deep causes behind this phenomenon,and finally shows readers what they should do to realize their value in life.Therefore,this translation project can help target readers cultivate a right mindset and realize the value of life.This paper analyzes the guiding significance of skopos theory to the translation practice in terms of vocabulary and sentences through specific cases.Skopos theory believes that the way in which the target text is eventually shaped up is largely determined by the function of the target text and the skopos of translation and holds that the intended purpose and function of the translation determine the translation methods and translation strategies.After carefully analyzing the linguistic features of the book,the translator applies extension,addition,annotation and inversion to translate abstract nouns,culture-loeded words and adverbial clauses based on skopos theory to ensure the coherence and accuracy of the translation.This practice has greatly improved the translator’s translation competence and research capability.
