| This is a report on the translation of 2021-2022 Annual Report of the Ministry of External Affairs of India,of which chapters 15-17 are the source text.During the COVID-19 pandemic,the Ministry of External Affairs of India cooperated with other nations to go through adversities;meanwhile,people with Indian origin have made great success in political and commercial realms,which have boosted India’s reputation around the globe.Under the background of Area Studies becoming one of the first-level disciplines within interdisciplinary category,this report can help Chinese government observe the development dynamics of India and better understand India’s development trajectory,thus laying a foundation for the friendly association of the two nations.The report also analyzes the source text,including its background,structure,main content and linguistic features.The source text is abundant in terms and proper nouns in lexical aspect,long and complex sentences in syntactic aspect,and subtitles and parallel structures in textual aspect.The report deals with the main difficulties in translation based on Nida’s functional equivalence theory,including its development process,three main features,readers’ response,and Nida’s requirements of translation and specific steps.The main difficulties are the translation of terms,proper nouns and complex sentences.Paraphrase,addition and shift are employed to resolve them with the guidance of functional equivalence,so that the translation can be both truthful to the original text and comprehensible for target readers.Lastly the translator summarizes the experiences from the project and problems to be solved.It proves that functional equivalence is effective in resolving the translation difficulties in the report and the framework of translation steps makes the problem-solving process clearer. |
