A Report On The Translation Of Translating War:Literature And Memory In France And Britain From The 1940s To The 1960s(Chapter Two)

This is a report on the translation of Translating War: Literature and Memory in France and Britain from the 1940 s to the 1960 s by Angela Kershaw,of which Chapter 2 Zones of Hospitality is the source text.This chapter considers the implications of the international origins and circulation of the most French of French war books: L’Armee des ombres written by Joseph Kessel.It also takes L’Armee des ombres as an example of the way in which Algiers functioned as a wartime translational zone of hospitality,and demonstrates how war is influenced by translation,publication and other transnational cultural behavior.This translation project is under the guidance of Eugene Nida’s "functional equivalence" theory.Utilizing many different methods,like Sense-for-sense translation,literal translation with annotation,division,conversion,and tools like translation memory software,the translator solved many difficulties encountered during the translation,like cultural-loaded words and long sentences with multiple attributive clauses,striving to make the readers of the target text have a reading experience similar to that of the readers of the source text.
