Abstract/Summary:
Since the beginning of the 21 st century, the publishing industry has been unprecedentedly prosperous, and translation coursebooks have sprung up.But the quality of some coursebooks is not ideal. Therefore,it is urgent to evaluate and analyze coursebooks in order to improve the quality of them.At present, the number of the study of coursebook evaluation in China is small, and most of them are concentrated in English coursebooks used in primary, secondary schools,as well as in universities, and ESP(English for Specific Purposes)coursebooks. The evaluation of translation coursebooks is relatively scattered and urgently needs systematic and in-depth research. This thesis is a multi-dimensional evaluation of translation coursebooks of BTI series published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, with McDonough and Shaw’s evaluation model as the theoretical framework. It is found that these five translation coursebooks have some advantages: 1.The editors pay attention to the correlation between the content and exercises in chapters, which are closely combined;2.In the translation practice part, the flexibility is strong,so that teachers and students can choose the practice materials independently and flexibly;3.The usability is strong, because they have been used in different regions in China. However, there are also some shortcomings: 1.The proportion of translation theories, skills and practice is not well-balanced;2.The source of some selected materials is unknown;3.The fields involved in coursebooks are not extensive enough, with a slight gap from the syllabus. The selected topics are more traditional, and there is a lack of cutting-edge fields of the times;4.There are few visual materials such as tables and graphs that can better enhance the visual effect. Therefore, according to shortcomings found in the evaluation and the market requirements for translators, the author proposes related suggestions for the improvement of selected coursebooks. This thesis is significant to some extent.Firstly, this study maintains the objectivity of the evaluation results to a large extent, and provides a certain reference for teachers and students of English translation majors when selecting coursebooks in the future. What’s more,it’s hoped to enable students to better understand and adapt to the job needs after graduation. Finally,if more research focus on coursebooks in the future, the evaluation of translation coursebooks can be further deepened and detailed.
