In the context of core literacy in English,critical thinking ability has become an important goal for cultivating talents,and English continuation writing,as a way to organically combine reading and writing,is an effective way to improve students’ critical thinking ability.This study investigates the current situation of high school students’ critical thinking ability in English continuation writing,and explores the reasons for this situation,in order to provide reference for improving students’ critical thinking ability and writing skills.This study takes X Senior High School as an example to investigate the current situation of high school students’ critical thinking ability in English continuation writing.Using the hierarchical theory of critical thinking ability,interactive collaboration theory,and Bloom’s cognitive hierarchy theory as theoretical foundations,a questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the critical thinking disposition in students’ English continuation writing.Text analysis was used to investigate the use of critical thinking skills in students’ English continuation writing,and interview methods were used to explore the reasons for the current situation.The survey results show that the overall level of critical thinking ability of high school students in English continuation writing is not high.From the perspective of critical thinking disposition,the majority of high school students’ critical thinking disposition are in the medium contradictory range,with the lowest scores for truth seeking,but their abilities in all dimensions need to be improved.From the perspective of critical thinking skills,students have the worst level of critical thinking profundity,followed by logical reasoning,and other dimensions are also weaker.The reasons for the current situation are: the teachers’ own lack of critical awareness,the students’ lack of interest in writing and critical thinking,and the lack of teaching to develop critical thinking ability.Based on the above research,this study proposes the following suggestions:from the teachers’ side,English teacher need to study continuously to improve their own critical consciousness and update their teaching concepts with the critical thinking.From the perspective of students,it is necessary to correct their learning attitude,cultivate good thinking habits,improve learning methods,and use critical thinking skills reasonably.From the aspect of teaching,English teacher can start from improving teaching objectives and cultivating students’ core literacy,matching teaching contents and making good use of resources for critical thinking,enriching teaching methods and inspiring students’ critical thinking,and innovating teaching evaluation to deepen students’ critical thinking ability.
