Family Narration And Cultural Metaphor In Amos Oz’s Novels

Amos Oz,an Israeli novelist,is one of the most important writers in contemporary Hebrew literature.He is good at describing the family in a small way.His works show the change of the cultural mentality of the Israeli people before and after the founding of the country.“Family” can be said to be the core theme of Oz’s creation,but the domestic academia has not carried out a systematic study on his family narrative.The purpose of this thesis is to study the family narrative in Amos Oz’s novels and to explore the deep Jewish cultural implications behind it.At the same time,the author combs through the idea of reconciliation and the family narrative poetics of Oz’s novels,and shows the cultural,political and artistic values of Oz’s literature.The thesis includes three parts: introduction,text and conclusion.The introduction first introduces Oz’s life and creation,then summarizes the research results of domestic and foreign scholars on Oz,and finally clarifies the research methods,research purposes and research significance of this paper,and clarifies the key concepts.The text consists of five chapters.The first chapter aims to clarify the historical background and cultural context of Oz’s creation,starting from the three dimensions of historical background,literary history background and contemporary Israeli cultural background respectively,to establish a vivid three-dimensional literary coordinate for Oz and pave the way for the following family narrative research.The second chapter is “the cultural exploration of family space in Oz’s novels”.Family is an important field in Oz’s writing.Family space not only shows the spiritual world of Jews,but also contains profound Jewish cultural significance.In this chapter,the four family Spaces of study,kitchen,bedroom and bathroom are taken as the starting point,and the Jewish cultural issues such as cultural continuity,female identity,marital relationship and spiritual trauma elaborated in the Oz family narrative are discussed respectively.Chapter three is “Political concerns in family novels”.Family has an important influence on the formation of individual political ideas,and Oz also noted that individuals will be infused with family political ideas.This chapter explains the political concerns in Oz’s family novels,and analyzes Oz’s reflection on the collective ownership of the kibbutz and the political fanaticism in family life.Finally,it illustrates Oz’s political stance of calling for peace and his ideal solution.The fourth chapter is “Ideal ‘Home’: the idea of reconciliation in Oz’s novels”.Oz’s novel not only expresses a longing for the ultimate reconciliation,but also points out that the ultimate reconciliation is a paradoxical existence which is difficult to realize.This chapter combs the concept of reconciliation in Oz’s novels.Oz conveys his concept of love and reconciliation through the new family of “three persons”,shows his desire for reconciliation through the utopian carnival description,and realizes reconciliation with himself through the “third state” of juxtaposition of dream and reality.The fifth chapter is “Oz’s family narrative strategy”.Oz’s elaborate writing technique not only makes the novel’s family narrative better presented,but also expands the novel’s style in an experimental way.On the one hand,the “contractlike beginning” of Oz’s novel shows the disharmony of family relations,which implies the mutual game between individuals,family collectives and family members.On the other hand,Oz seeks more possibilities for family through flowing narration in the unstable field of “unhappy family”.The conclusion makes a summary of the whole text,paying tribute to Oz,who has left a precious literary legacy for mankind.
