Research On Li Tongxuan’s Theory Of "Unity Of Three Saints"

Li Tongxuan,known as elder Li in the world,was a famous lay Buddhist in the Tang Dynasty and a Huayan scholar.As a lay Buddhist,he annotated the "Huayan Jing",and the 40-volume "Xin Huayan Jing Lun" was an important work for his understanding of Huayan.The statement that he put forward Vairocana Buddha,Manjushri and Samantabhadra "Three Saints" changed the previous pattern of Huayan school monks emphasizing Samantabhadra and despising Manjushri,and elevated Manjushri to the same status as Samantha Bodhisattva,and redefines the existence of the Buddha with the combination of the two Bodhisattvas.His thoughts spread widely after the Song Dynasty,and had a huge impact on later sects,such as Zen and Pure Land.On the basis of previous researches,this paper will further comprehensively grasp Li Tongxuan’s Huayan thought by discussing the theory of "Unity of Three Saints".The full text includes five chapters,the first is the introduction,which focuses on the reasons for choosing the topic,and summarizes the research progress of Li Tongxuan at home and abroad,which lays the foundation for the research of this thesis.The second chapter summarizes Li Tongxuan’s life and writings,and briefly explains the translation of the Huayan Jing in Li Tongxuan’s time and the process of the establishment of Huayan Sect.The third and fourth chapters are the core content of this article,focusing on the specific meaning of the "Three Saints",the formation process of the "Unity of Three Saints",and the dialectical relationship between the "Three Saints".The fifth chapter discusses the effect of the theory of "Unity of Three Saints" on Huayan Sect through the development of Li Tongxuan’s theory of "Unity of Three Saints" to Chengguan’s conception of the Three Saints’ Harmony and Harmony,which in turn affects the formation of Zongmi’s "Zen Reconciliation" and the Huayan Repentance Method.Development and its contribution to the process of Sinicization of Buddhism.In a word,based on the relevant materials,this paper studies the theory of "Unity of Three Saints" in Li Tongxuan’s Huayan philosophy,and explores its contribution to the development of Huayan Sect and even Chinese Buddhism.
