A Report On The C-E Translation Of Folktales Of The Gelao(Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Gestalt Psychology Theory

This report is based on the translation of some excerpts of Folktales of the Gelao edited by the Cultural Reform and Development Office of the Wenchuan Gelao Ethnic Group of Guizhou Province.Folktales of the Gelao records a large number of stories and legends about the social environment,ethnic customs,culture,and historical heroes of the Gelao ethnic group.The translation research for such works is not only conducive to the dissemination and development of Chinese ethnic culture but also promotes the translation research of ethnic literature.This report applies Gestalt Psychology Theory in the analysis of the translation.Gestalt Psychology,proposed by German psychologists Wertmer and Kaufka in 1912,believes that what is perceived by is greater than what is seen by the eyes.In the process of reconstruction of perception,it puts forward five perceptual laws including law of similarity,law of proximity,law of continuity,law of closure and law of figure-background,which,together with the heterogeneous isomorphism proposed by psychologist Arnheim,constitutes the core theory of Gestalt Psychology.On the basis of these core theories,translation researchers in recent years have summarized several principles of Gestalt translation such as the principle of wholeness,the principle of closure and the principle of simplicity.At present,there are few research on the translation of Gelao literary works using Gestalt Psychology Theory.Therefore,the report discusses the translation of Folktales of the Gelao(Excerpt)from three aspects including the principle of wholeness,the principle of closure and the principle of simplicity under the guidance of Gestalt Psychology Theory and employs six translation techniques such as amplification,restructuring,textual notes,explicitation,replacement of equivalents and ellipsis to transfer the gestalt quality from the source text to the target text.The report can has a reference value for the further English translation of ethnic literary works from the perspective of Gestalt Psychology Theory.
