A Translation Report On Data Lives (Excerpt)

With the development of technology and society,data is playing an increasingly important role in people’s lives.Therefore,in order to further understand the essence and application of data,the translator chose the book “Data Lives” to translate and write a translation practice report.This report mainly describes the problems and solutions encountered in the translation of Data Lives(excerpt).The book Data Lives analyzes the role of data in academic research and daily life through story-telling and academic analysis.Now in the era of big data,people must pay attention to the nature of data.This book adopts the two ways mentioned above to reduce dullness of such texts and increases fun,and people can have a better understanding of data.The source text for this report is the first four chapters of the book in which the author tells two stories to show the role of data in academic research and ordinary life.In the translation practice,the author has resorted to machine translation for assistance to improve translation efficiency.Machine translation reduces repetitive activities during the translation process and allows the translator to focus more on the translation.But it is not perfect to use machine translation alone,so the author adopts Catford’s translation theory to provide guidance for this translation task and solve the difficulties encountered in the translation process.It includes level shift and category shift which can solve the problem of vocabulary and sentence structure transformation in the translation process.
