Abstract/Summary:
Documentary films play a crucial role in facilitating cross-cultural understanding between China and the rest of the world.Through their lens with cultural, artistic, social, and communicative values, these films are virtually a comprehensive portrayal and video record of contemporary times.Nevertheless, few interpreting was conducted in this field. This is a report attempting on a simulated interpreting practice for documentary, utilizing the Interpretive Theory as theoretical framework. The author selected the fourth episode of “The Rise of the Great Powers” on CCTV,titled“The Pioneer of Industrial Revolution,” as the practice material, recorded the simultaneous interpreting with text and produced a transcription accordingly. In relation to the difficulties faced during the task, the three distinct levels identified were the lexical, syntactic, and rhetorical levels. These difficulties were methodically analyzed by utilizing the “three steps” of the Interpretive Theory—comprehension, deverbalisation, and reformulation.Following the Interpretive Theory, coping strategies such as omission, conversion, paraphrase, and domestication were put forward by the author who drew conclusions on this interpreting practice. The author hopes this report will provide helpful experience for future documentary interpreting practice.
