A Report On E-C Translation Of Rescuing The Planet:Protecting Half The Land To Heal The Earth

The ecological environment has been deteriorating since the 1930 s,and environment protection has become a major global issue.To deal with and solve ecological problems is the only way to achieve sustainable development in China.Therefore,translating works related to the ecological environment is not only conducive to promoting the ecological civilization thought of respecting life and nature,but also the harmonious coexistence between man and nature.Basing on that the author of report has chosen Chapter Two from the book Rescuing the Planet: Protecting Half the Land to Heal the Earth written by Tony Hiss as the source text of the translation practice.In terms of text features,this informational text is featured by concise language,a variety of syntactic structures and passive voice.In order to realize the code-switching between English and Chinese to the greatest extent,the translator has chosen J.C.Catford’s(1965)category shifts of the Translation Shift Theory as her guiding theory in accordance with the characteristics of this source text.Specifically speaking,the class-shifts are used to guide the conversion of words’ part of speech.The units-shifts are used to guide the transformation between words and sentences,aiming to make the translated version fluent and readable.The structure-shifts are used to guide the translation when handling the passive voice and complex sentences,which intends to express the hidden meaning of source text accurately.It’s found that the Translation Shift Theory can provide guidance for solving the translation problems of informational text about ecological environment including the conversion of part of speech and voice,and the translation of complicated and passive sentences.What’s more,it can not only convey the original information to the maximum extent,but also take the reading habits of the target language readers into account.The purpose of this report is to explore the translation methods of such informational texts,in order to provide some inspiration and help for the translation of similar texts.
