A large number of theories that emphasize and promote sensual experience have emerged in the discipline of aesthetics in recent times, aims to correct the longstanding tendency in traditional aesthetics to downplay perceptual experience. One of the important dimensions of this sensual turn is the “emergence of the body”.Many aesthetic theories regard the body as an important aspect or even a central object of study, using the body as a base to explain the development of sensual aesthetic activities, thus revealing the importance of sensuality in aesthetic research. This paper selects the relevant discourse on the body and sensibility in Terry Eagleton’s Body Discourse,Richard Shusterman’s Somaesthetics, and Wolfgang Welsch’s Undoing Aesthetics to start a discussion of the sensual turn of aesthetic to the dimension of the body.In his interpretation of the theories of Marx,Nietzche, and Freud,Eagleton clarifies the significance and fundamental status of the body as a sensual subject.Marx discusses the alienation of the subject’s body and sensual life in capitalist society, revealing the urgency of restoring the body’s sensual experience and the fundamental position of the body in aesthetic practice;Nietzche ’s profound rebellion against the rationalist aesthetic tradition highlights the primacy of the body’s sensual experience in the subject’s way of being;Freud’s psychoanalysis strongly overturns the traditional aesthetic perception of the aesthetic subject and aesthetic activity and advocates a comprehensive recovery of bodily desires and basic sensations.Richard Shusterman’s theory of Somaesthetics indicates the primacy and fundamental status of soma perception and reveals the importance of the soma’s foundational aesthetic feelings in aesthetic research and the subject’s self-knowledge.Shusterman emphasizes the importance of practice in the three levels of Somaesthetics, analytical, practical, and practical. He advocates the specific act of improving and training the soma as the practical dimension of Somaesthetics, through a series of improvement exercises, the subject will gain a better self and move towards a better life.Wolfgang Welsch’s theory of Undoing Aesthetics contains a reshaping of the body’s aesthetic perception system and a transcendence of traditional aesthetics. On the basis of reconstructing the body’s aesthetic perception,Welsch emphasizes that the study of aesthetics should return to the issues of perception and emotion, which are closely related to the original meaning of aesthetics,as a requirement for the connection between aesthetic experience based on body perception and the world,we should establish a new aesthetics that transcends traditional art aesthetics to rediscover and understand the extremely profound connection between the aesthetic perception of the subject’s body as the foundation of aesthetic activity and the world,in order to better grasp the complex aesthetic situation we are facing today. In the comparison of the above theories,we have made clear the starting point and theoretical direction of the three, although their purports are different, but all of them show the criticism to the traditional aesthetics, which emphasizes the reason and spirit but neglects the body and sensibility, and on this basis, point out that we should pay enough theoretical attention to the body as the subject of sensibility. We further make it clear that the body,as the subject of sensual activities,is the only basic place for all aesthetic activities to be generated, the body gets the attention it deserves as a sensual base,in addition,we need to recognize the possible theoretical limitations of the aesthetic sensual turn, and the aesthetic reflection on sensuality and the body has yet to go further. |
