As one of the most important representatives of Western Marxism,Adorno’s thought of“non-identity” has a great influence on Frankfurt School and even modern western philosophy. He believes that the pursuit of essence and eternity in western traditional philosophy leads to the problem of “identity”.Adorno has deeply analyzed the meaning of "identity" and has carried on a thorough reflection and criticism on it.Finally,he regards art as a way to break and save “identity”.So,how should we understand the thought of “non-identity”? How does Adorno save “identity” with “non-identity”? How is it possible to break “identity”? The above problems are the problems to be studied in this paper. In view of the above problems, this paper will study Adorno’s “non-identity” thought from the following four aspects. The first part expounds the theoretical origin and critical background of Adorno’s“non-identity” thought.Western philosophy, especially the philosophy of German idealism,as well as modern and contemporary irrationalism, phenomenology and Lukács’ s materialization theory, play a vital role in the birth of Adorno’s “non-identity”.He deeply studied the previous philosophical theory and combined with the reality of capitalist society to comprehensively analyzed “identity” in the aspects of politics, economy, social culture and so on.The second part further explores the theoretical dimension of “non-identity” thought.Adorno used“non-identity” to criticize “identity” thoroughly. It is pointed out that the salvation of identity should be realized in the way of “constellation”.The third part explains that Adorno’s thought of “non-identity” tends to the study of autonomous art and aesthetic redemption. He tried to fight against “identity” by means of autonomous art and save “identity” by means of imitation. He extensively studied different art forms in order to exert the redemptive power of art to realize “non-identity utopia”.The fourth part reflects Adorno’s “non-identity” thought. His "non-identity" thought opposed the primacy of any form, and proposed to deal with the relationship between subject and object in the way of “constellation”,and revealed the true of the capitalist world of comprehensive “identity”.His thought enriches the theoretical resources of the Western Marxism, and plays an important role in understanding“non-identity” and avoiding the negative impact of “identity”.However, his thought is inevitably limited due to its high abstraction and a certain degree of elitism. Finally, this paper attempts to explore the way to break the dilemma of “identity”,and points out that the pursuit of “non-identity utopia” is the eternal mission of philosophy.
